Our thanks to players Bob (Principal Horn) and Julie (trumpet) Shaw for providing this insight into the musicians aboard the Titanic, including bandleader Wallace Hartley, former playng member of the Huddersfield Philharmonic. Any suggestion of lingering low morale or musical sloppiness would be ominous indeed for one of the most important musical institutions in the country’s most musical town.
It can be reported that from an ..read more

Principal conductor Natalia Luis-Bassa did not appear – she was “indisposed”, the audience was informed – and three members of the orchestra took over conducting duties at the last minute.
It is understood that Ms Luis-Bassa’s non–appearance was the result of a clash and ..read more

Huddersfield Philharmonic Orchestra are delighted to have been invited to be the resident orchestra for a new venture, Huddersfield Youth Opera, whose opening concert “excerpts from the world’s favourite operas” will be on Saturday 25th September 2010, 7.30pm at the Lawrence Batley Theatre. We are particularly happy that our leader, Mary Barber, will be leading those players who are taking part. Opening the subscriber concert season with a “bang”, this concert will first showcase both the wind and string sections of the orchestra. It will then move on to explore two symphonies by Beethoven, the first of which is lesser and the second much better known. A concert of contrasts.
Handel Musick for the Royal Fireworks (original orcestration – oboes, bassoons, horns, trumpets and percussion)
JS Bach Brandenburg Concerto No 3 in G (strings only)
Beethoven Wellington’s Victory
Beethoven Symphony No 5 in C minor
