Hello, Many thanks for expressing an interest in playing with the Huddersfield Philharmonic Orchestra. We’re always pleased to hear from prospective new playing members.

The Society is a Registered Charity and consists of the orchestra itself, its patrons, subscribers & sponsors and an executive committee appointed at the Annual General Meeting (usually held in June). The committee is made up of officers, playing members and subscriber representatives – all volunteers.

Membership of the orchestra involves application, audition, and acceptance by the executive committee in consultation with the appropriate Section Principal and the Orchestra Leader. Full membership for the 2011-12 season costs £90 per annum (£30 per subscriber concert), (which can be paid in two instalments, if desired & is agreed). There are reduced rates are available to those in full-time education or suffering financial hardship.

We currently have vacancies at present for violins, violas, ‘cellos, double basses, tuba and percussion. In particular we are especially looking for a few more good violinists please to boost the sections.

Unfortunately, we do not necessarily have vacancies in all sections of the orchestra at any one time and applications will be considered in that light. If we cannot accommodate you as a playing member at the moment, your name can be placed with a Section Principal in case of unexpected opportunities.

When making an application please give details of your qualifications and playing experience (with dates), and remember to send us your contact details so that we can get back to you. As amateur players aspiring towards professional standards of  performance and musical excellence our expectations are naturally high; attainment of at least  ‘grade 8′  level (strings level 7) can be anticipated as a general indication of the Phil’s minimum requirements (and to avoid any possible disappointment &/or misunderstanding).

    Hello im looking to apply

      Hi Philip,

I think that you may be somone whose mail got lost due to our recent problems (computer crash). If so, our apologies. Alternatively, I may have replied but lost any reply you then sent to us.

For us to consider any application, we need to know what instrument you play, what standard you have reached, and what experience of orchestral playing you have had. We can then advise if we have suitable vacancies and make arrangements (where appropriate) for you to attend a rehearsal and follow up on your interest.

Thank you for your interest to date and please come back to us with the details requested so that we can give you a better response in due course.

      Hi Maria,
Thanks for your interest in the orchestra. We do currently have a bass trombonist who is a regular player with us, but are always happy to hear from others who may be available. I am replying as publicity officer, and will pass on your details to our principal trumpet, Mike Briggs, who generally organises players for individual concerts/rehearsals and to Nick Barker, our orchestral manager, who maintains a list of players who can be called on as necessary. They will be more closely aware than I am of our player requirements for the coming season.

Thanks once again for your interest,
      Ruth M Holmes, Publicity Officer

Hi, my name is Grace Lowther and i am an 18 year old flute player. I am currently studying music at the University of Huddersfield specialising in performance. I have grade 8 ABRSM and i am very interested in playing with this orchestra. I have played with a military band for around 5 years and i am now very keen to push myself further and join a good orchestra. I understand there are never many vacancies for flutes but i would really love this oppurtunity as i feel i am now at a level where i need to push myself further. Please let me know if you have any vacancies.

    Thank you, Grace
